- NIF
Voluntarism, Democracy, Loyalty and Equality
The Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports is the country's largest voluntary organisation.
In the period from 2007 – 2011, «Open and inclusive sport» was chosen as the overall objective for Norwegian sport with the aim to:
- Give more children, youth and adults improved opportunities for participating in activities
- Prioritize groups that are not well organised and included in sports clubs
- Show respect for human dignity and secure equal opportunities for growth and development
- Increase voluntary engagement and local added value
In addition, the NIF is striving for a more active role in society, as challenges within labour, social inclusion, education, health, recreation/leisure time and life styles keep arising for all generations.
Daily, sport federations/ associations and their clubs are working with the inclusion of disabled and minority groups.
Aim and target groups
The overall aim with the specific funding from the Ministry of Culture in Norway is to include and involve new groups in the sport clubs’ ordinary activity and programme through preventing economic and cultural barriers that can be an obstacle for participating in organised sport activity.
NIF is focusing on children (6 – 12 years old) and youth (13 – 19 years old) with minority background, in particular to enhance the involvement of girls, with an emphasis on girls from families with low income.
Aim and target groups:
Since 1993, NIF has received funding from the Ministry of Culture for the project “Social Inclusion in Sport Clubs”. Based on this, NIF is supporting ten cities and one regional confederation where local sport clubs coordinate and administer projects to introduce and offer activities of interest for children and youth.
Project example “Open Hall”
There are several projects which differ from city to city and from sport club to sport club. One of them is the Open hall – project. Children and youth can be active and participate in an open hall with free access to sports equipment.
Without any coaches or adults, majority and minority groups can come together, have fun, and play safely.
