Semmelweis University
Semmelweis University Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Budapest is the largest, the most comprehensive and the oldest centre for education & training as well as research in sport in Hungary with 86 years of history, originally established as the Royal College of Physical Education in 1925. The Semmelweis University has 4 other faculties in the field of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Management studies with a total of 11.000 students, where nearly half of them are international students studying in English and German.
On a national level the University Faculty has a sports policy forming role in close cooperation with all stakeholders of sport/physical activity, including governmental and non-governmental organisations. Additionally, when national level scheme and documents on education in sports/physical activity are developed, the university experts are the key contributors. Graduates of the Faculty are serving all fields of sport and physical activity in Hungary and are employed all over the world.
Research activities cover the entire human life-span and the major themes of the sport sector. The university-business relations are strong, serving the socially needed as well. Networking and working in consortia is fundamental for the faculty members and research teams. Institutional and individual memberships in most European and international sport and sport science organizations are evaluated as important sources of the development. Participation in EU funded research and project activities is an integral part of daily operations with successful national-level dissemination.
Besides the international co-operations with 39 partner institutions worldwide, the Faculty has launched the major study programmes in English as well in 1993. With 15 years of support of the IOC Olympic Solidarity the 3-month non-degree International Intensive Coaching Course in English is organized in 16 different Olympic sports since 1971.
